Amberton University is a private, nontraditional, specialized upper-division and graduate institution catering exclusively to mature, working adults who seek a relevant educational opportunity in a Christian atmosphere. The university provides educational offerings, both campus-based and distance-learning, for individuals who neither require nor seek the social trappings normally associated with traditional educational institutions. Amberton University is located in Garland, a northeastern suburb of the city of Dallas.

Amberton University is accredited by the Commission of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to award bachelor's and masters degrees. In addition, the university is recognized by the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board and the U.S. Dept of Education as a licensed, degree-granting institution. The curriculum for the Master of Arts degree in Professional Counseling meets the academic requirements for licensing as a professional counselor in Texas. The Master of Arts degree in School Counseling satisfies the academic and certification requirements for the School Counseling Certification as established by the Texas State Board of Educator Certification. All of Amberton's distance learning degree programs and e-Courses comply with the "Principles of Good Practice" for distance learning programs.
